Fiber – Why Is It Good For Digestion? Great question! Fiber is good for digestion because if regulates the digestive process. Allowing for better nutrient absorption as well as adding bulk to your stool to control (or eliminate) constipation. It is also responsible for sweeping the excess toxins from your system, thus relieving the load on your other digestive organs like your kidney, liver, pancreas and gallbladder. Over the counter laxatives are one of the most purchased drug store items. However, consistent use of them can be extremely detrimental to your overall health, because they teach your body to stop functioning properly and to rely on unnatural sources and stimulants to do its job. Something that is super good for digestion and is also a terrific natural laxative is aloe vera. I have a great source for aloe vera juice if you’re interested. Other great foods for optimal digestion are: Chia seeds flaxseeds leafy greens Probiotics Berries coconut water Just make sure that you are also drinking plenty of good ole H2O. Ideally, you should be drinking ½ of your body weight in ounces of water daily. Want to keep up with the latest? Fiber – How Does It Help With Diabetes? When it comes to controlling your blood sugars, fiber is your friend. Because fiber comes from carbohydrates, but is not absorbed by the body, the amount of fiber content of a food can actually be subtracted from the carb number. So let’s say that half of an avocado is 6 grams of carbohydrate, and has 5 grams of fiber, that avocado has only 1 gram of carbs. Pretty cool right?! Here’s why fiber is so important. Fiber is responsible for sweeping away excess fats and cholesterol from your digestive tract, as well as toxins in your body, which reduces the load on your liver and therefore helps your body produce and use blood glucose and insulin properly. Soluble fiber especially, slows down your digestion process, which helps you feel full longer as well as keeping your blood sugar stable. Great sources of soluble fiber include: Oats oat bran nuts flaxseeds Beans lentils peas berries carrots Insoluble fiber is also super important. It speeds up digestion by adding bulk to your stools (so bye-bye constipation) Great sources of insoluble fiber include: Brown rice barley bulgur broccoli Cucumbers carrots zucchini green beans One thing of note would be, when you are upping your fiber intake, you need to also make sure that you are upping your water intake. Ideally, you should be drinking ½ of your body weight in ounces of water each day. Another great source of insoluble fiber is avocado. On my #WTMKlive show on Facebook last week, we make a great chocolate pudding using avocado. If you’d like the recipe, let me know. WK2-Post5-Fiber-How-Does-It-Help-With-Diabetes

Fiber – Where Do I Get It? When it comes to overall health, maximizing weight management, maintaining heart health and stabilizing your blood sugars, having a diet that is high in fiber is very important. Fiber is responsible for detoxifying your body, sweeping out excess fats and cholesterol, proper food digestion and therefore, proper nutrient absorption. Fiber is part of the structure of plants and helps to build plant molecules, and even though it is not digestible by humans, it is an important part of our digestive and overall health. Something else of note is that even though fiber comes from the carbohydrates we eat, they have zero calories because we don’t digest them. Here’s a list of some foods that are high-fiber. Which ones will you add to your diet this week? Oats oat bran nuts flaxseeds Beans lentils peas berries Carrots brown rice barley bulgur broccoli cucumber green beans zucchini Another great fiber rich food is avocado. On my #WTMKlive show on Facebook last week, I made a great chocolate pudding using avocado. If you’d like the recipe, let me know. ? WK2-Post4-Fiber-Where-Do-I-Get-It

Even though most of us are aware that we need to have a diet high in fiber, most of us today are still only getting around 15 grams or less. Fiber is an extremely important piece of the nutrition puzzle, because it plays a huge role in our digestive health as well as our overall well being. While there are lots of foods on our grocery store shelves that say “high fiber” or “fiber added”, those are not the best ways to incorporate more fiber into our diets. Fiber needs to come from the plant source itself in order to provide our bodies with the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that we need. Foods that are high in fiber include: oats, oat bran, brown rice, bulgur, broccoli, beans, lentils, nuts, flaxseeds, carrots, broccoli, cucumber, green beans and zucchini. Another word about fiber. When you increase your fiber intake, you need to also make sure that you increase your water intake. In fact, you should ideally be drinking ½ of your body weight in ounces of water per day! Another great fiber rich food is avocado. On my #WTMKlive show last week we made a delicious chocolate pudding using avocado. If you’d like the recipe, just let me know. How-Much-Fiber

"Could have", "should have" no more... As I was checking out what national observance today way, I found that the 3rd Saturday in July is national toss away the "could haves" and "should haves" day! What does that mean? Well, try this.... 1) Take 2 sheets of paper, title one "could have" 2) Write down all the things you "could have" done, but didn't 3) Do the same thing for "should have" 4) Crumple them up and toss them away Decide that today is the day you will no longer look back. After all, you're not going there and giving energy to the past robs you of your energy to move forward. I'm even going to go one step further, make one more list... 1) Title it "WILL DO"!!!! 2) Write down 10 things you "will do" to improve your life 3) Post a pic below and tell me one of your things #CoachCollette #wellness #willdo Will-Do
