Is a Sacred Medicine People suppose to ask for payment?

This is a topic among the spiritual path at the moment. My dear friend/teacher Robbie Warren who is a Medicine Women has a very wise words on this topic.

I am often asked by other healers about the idea that a Medicine Person is not supposed to ask for payment for their services. This is really a very good question and something that has been misinterpreted for a long time.

Many, many generations ago when there was a Medicine person within each village or tribe, they cared for and nurtured the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the People. The Medicine Person did not have to ask for anything in return, because among the People it was considered dishonorable to show up asking for healing or guidance empty-handed. The person seeking the time and energy and efforts from the Healer would bring skins, tools, food, clothing or other necessities to create an exchange of energy. There was always balance and the circle of giving and receiving was always complete. In this way, the Healer never asked for anything but it was known that there would be an exchange.

This has been interpreted over the years that a Medicine Person “should” not ask to receive anything in exchange for their energy and efforts. The bottom line is, years ago they didn’t have to. And no one was ever turned away for what they brought in exchange, no matter how great or small. All of the gifts were honored. Today, people don’t always understand the honor that comes from the exchange. People don’t understand the old ways in which things were done. Today we use money for exchange. There is a balance that happens today, just in a different way.

It is in that same tradition that I operate my healing practice. I work on a sliding scale so that no matter where someone is in their prosperity they can still create that energetic exchange. I also never turn a person away for lack of funds; I will accept a trade of goods or services if that is what they have to offer. I have had the oil changed in my car, a new haircut, a landscape design for our Tiny home and I have even had people leave casseroles on my doorstep. The important thing is that we have an exchange of energy that creates balance.

Only as someone gives can they receive, if someone gives nothing, then they receive nothing.
