I was watching the ABC news this lunchtime and in the money section the announcer was talking about Burger King and their new burger they’ve just announced, two quarter ponders together. Then he started talking about the calories in their two highest calorie burger. He finished almost apologetically saying “I know, it’s a buzzkill to talk about calories.” This really got to me and it got me thinking. I’ve lost 60 lbs through counting calories. My wife has lost 75 lbs the same way. Most people don’t even give calories a second thought, until they need to lose weight. I know we didn’t. If the news networks conducted any “man on the street” polls asking the public if they knew how many calories they should be eating in a day in order to maintain a healthy weight, or if they had any idea how many calories they ate daily on average, I’m betting there would be a lot of blank looks. Most people just don’t know. The media has a huge reach and they could easily be a huge force for healthy change if they promoted the idea of being more calorie conscious instead of talking about calories as a buzzkill.
*End of rant!*
