    Confession.

When the idea to have a flower crown 👑 workshop as part of our recent Bold Heart Visibility retreat popped into my head, an old tired story also came in hot on its heels.

    “I am not crafty.”

I’ve heard and read more than a few times that we should tell our inner critic to shut up as the antidote to letting it run the show.

To me, this feels like the opposite end of the stick.

Ms. I’m Not Crafty had valuable advice for me. “Hire an expert to lead this session. Maybe attendees will have a similar thought. How might that actually be key to their breakthrough?”

So I hired my colleague and friend Jeannine O’Neil of Magnolia Blooms to lead the session. “I’m not crafty” popped in again as I fumbled around with the floral tape (I had to take my crown apart and put it back together again twice).

“Maybe you’re not crafty, maybe you are. Right now how about we just have fun and see what happens?”

Other people’s inner critics came out to play too. We noticed them. We learned from them. Not by shutting them up and shutting them down. Not by believing them either.

Simply by allowing them to have a voice. Acknowledging their presence. Getting curious about why they came to visit.

Your inner critic is a part of you. Telling it to shut up is meeting negative self talk with more negative self talk.

Next time your inner critic shows up, how about something along the lines of “Oh hey, what’s up? What brings you around today?”

    Listen.

Then trust that you can discern what is resonant, and lovingly release the rest.
